Salsa Maya was vacationing in the Summer of 2017 and it made some amazing stops around South America. South America is home to the world's largest rainforest and river, and has probably the widest range of climates in one continent. Culture is very important because we learn about food, history, music, language, art and of course to see on what Salsa Maya can go on!! So if you want to hear about the trip or just get great recommendations where to stop and how to travel alone in South America read on...
Traveling alone and as a girl around the world might be scary to most, but I have to say that I wasn't ever alone. You meet great people along the way, doing exactly what you are doing. And usually these people become your closest friends. Of course always be aware of your surroundings and do not flash your fancy camera or earrings around. (tip: people know your a tourist when your looking up, always look straight and pretend you know where your going) I stayed in a range of hostels and hotels as well as airbnbs, and although you usually get what you pay for, there are a lot of amazing places for $8/night.
I try not to plan too much, I like to plan out what cities I want to visit and see a spot or something that is interesting and once your there ask the taxi drivers, concierges, other tourists, and locals. I've found amazing spots by referral. Make sure to read reviews and negotiate, everyone can lower their prices!! If you want to try local food (which you should no questions asked) stay away from places that offer pizza and hamburgers, those are tourist places which tend to be nasty and expensive. Enter a restaurant that is full of locals and check out what they are having. So all the spots I am about to recommend I am not sponsored or anything by them, just places were I had an amazing time and ate delicious food!
